DEA Regulatory Update | Effective March 9, 2026
EMS Agencies Are Now DEA Registrants. Are You Enforcement-Ready?
Under the DEA’s new EMS registration rule, agencies are directly accountable for controlled substance security, documentation, and diversion prevention. Most EMS organizations are not structured for this level of federal scrutiny.
Speak With a DEA Compliance ExpertThe DEA Has Redefined EMS Accountability.
As of March 9, 2026, the DEA’s final rule under the Protecting Patient Access to Emergency Medications Act (PPAEMA) creates a dedicated Emergency Medical Services Agency registration category.
This means:
- EMS agencies obtain a single DEA registration per state
- Agencies—not hospitals—hold direct accountability
- Standing orders for administration are formally authorized
- Strict storage, security, and recordkeeping requirements apply
- Detailed, retrievable documentation is mandatory
This is not a procedural update. It is a federal enforcement shift.
